History of HL7 Standards

Many patients believe that electronic medical records are easily available in every hospital. In the past few decades, companies needed clinically advanced medical inventions so they could work easily. However, at that time, medical facilities and technology were not that advanced. So, the companies needed a solution so they could easily transfer medical records to other medical organizations.

HL7 provided many companies a framework of the solutions to medical problems such as conducting electronic medical records that will improve customer care. Since 1987, many companies are now using HL7 solutions to improve patient hospitality.


Objectives of Using HL7 

The main objective of HL7 is to make sure that the medical record is always available for every required person. Before the creation of HL7, healthcare IT systems performed data exchanges via customized interfacing systems that were complex to use. This technique was only used by big medical organizations that were financially stable.

These systems were created using a very modern technique that was used by IT professionals. Since there were no standard data formats for collecting and storing patient data, the cost of building such interfaces was prohibitive, and most hospitals in the 1980s were only using them. Who Uses HL7?

Today, more than 90% of healthcare facilities in the United States use HL7. There are many HL7 organizations in 27 countries, making it a truly global standard solution. Generally, there a three different categories of professionals who use HL7, all of whom have different needs and requirements that need to be fulfilled.


Clinical Professionals

Medical professionals are tasked with transferring clinical data, creating tools to move such data, or creating clinical applications that need to share or exchange data with other systems. HL7 Version 2

It is the most common and widely used version in the medical industry. In this version, the medical database needs to be checked for medical information. HL7 V2 sends messages to users in response to a certain event. It could be anything from an external stimuli or coded event. However, healthcare organizations need to be careful as this version is extremely complex to use and may require expert knowledge.


HL7 Version 3

This version is more powerful than its predecessor and based on model-driven methodology built to better support conformance testing of medical records that is available for medical professionals. HL7 version two facilitates clinical communications like recording new patient medical forms. HL7 version 3 comes with additional capabilities for informatics and support for government officials’ strategies.
