While many people use Instagram every day, many have difficulty building an active community. In this post, I am going to share with you 9 strategies to increase your Instagram engagement.
But let’s start from the beginning.
What does engagement on Instagram mean?
Commitment, activity, or engagement in English is simply interaction. In the case of Instagram – it is about the interaction of other Instagram users with your content: likes, comments, marking others in the comment under the post, messages, etc.

Think about how you use Instagram. If you see a beautiful photo of a pink couch on Instagram (who wouldn’t want a pink couch) and you like it, then you are getting involved. If you leave a comment under a valuable description of an experienced person – you are also getting involved. If you add someone’s post to the gallery or share it in your Story, you are getting involved.
It sounds simple, but the lack of commitment to our post can be a headache and frustration. Because everyone wants what we shared on Instagram to meet with a positive response, interaction, and commitment. Otherwise, you feel as if you are talking loudly and clearly to a group of people and not getting any response. Ouch, that could hurt.
Why is Instagram engagement important?
Exactly. Everyone says commitment this, commitment that you have to get involved because it’s so important. But why is it so important? Engagement matters to Instagram’s algorithm based on user activity. Commitment is a sign for the algorithm that you create interesting, valuable content. The Instagram algorithm that measures your high engagement will allow your content to reach more people who follow you. And to people other than those who are watching you. Because the truth is that your content, without your own involvement – would only reach a small percentage of your followers.
Commitment as confirmation that you understand your observer
Instagram’s algorithm is not everything. If someone engages in your content – he lets you know that what you write has value and sense for him.
I observe that one of the reasons why engagement does not occur is by bringing up topics that do not apply to your community. This usually means no in-depth knowledge of the observer’s profile, the recipient of your content. Imagine that only women are watching you, and you are talking about football. You understand that the committee will not be great then.
9 ways to increase your Instagram engagement
As you already understand what commitment is, you also know that for you it should be a priority of your activity on Instagram. Now I’m going to go over some ways that can help you increase your Instagram engagement. Thanks to this, your account will start to bring real benefits, thanks to which Instagram will contribute to the development of your business.
# 1: Remove mass followers or mass followers
Start by removing mass followers, i.e. accounts that I colloquially refer to as ghost accounts. These are accounts that are themselves inactive, have a small number of followers, and are followed by several thousand people themselves. If you have a large account and it is impossible to check each person who is following you separately to find out if you are dealing with a mass follower, use the IQ Hashtag application, which in the paid version offers, among others the ability to identify mass followers.
# 2: Post valuable content
Content is king. People follow your Instagram account because you serve your follower, your potential customer, and create content that responds to their needs. Knowing your observer’s profile is key here.
Valuable content can be a more “lofty” value, such as inspiration, deal, message, education. Something that will positively affect others. There is also humor, creativity, and fun.
Properly selected topics will meet with a positive response from your observers. Not sure what these topics are? Check the statistics for the last month (you can only monitor statistics if you have a business account). By analyzing engagement under posts, you will be able to find out which topics interest your audience the most. Repeat these topics regularly.
# 3: Write a good description for the photo
Instagram is not only about beautiful photos. These are of course important because they represent the quality of our content, it is what others see first. However, when we build an online brand, community or just a thriving business on Instagram, first of all – we need to define the purpose of our content. When you know why you publish content and who you are addressing it to, it will be much easier for you to prepare a good description for the photo.
Before writing, think like a content strategist: analyze what has happened in the past or what you want to test, plan what you will publish, when, and for what purpose. What I do not recommend doing is impulse – by uploading something to Insta. Such actions usually do not bring the desired effect.
# 4: Show the character and personality of your brand (not just photos of your product)
Have you ever published a photo of yourself with a description in which you open up at least a little to your followers? In which you can feel what kind of person you are and what is your character?
People are much easier to build relationships when they see a real person. Imagine you want to find someone, for example, to help you lose weight (or put on weight).
You probably say that you do not want to show your private life on Instagram, make your life public or talk with whom you sleep with. This is the last thing I urge you to do. Identify a few topics that characterize you and talk about them regularly. For example: that you have a dog, that you like to paint, that you love fruit cocktails … whatever makes you different (if you don’t know what it is, ask a friend/girlfriend).
My forgetfulness on the phone, a husband who speaks broken Polish, and a talk about being a working mother – these are the topics that set me apart from others.
# 5: Publish eye-catching graphics and infographics
Imagine that you are standing in front of a bookshelf. You see hundreds of titles. Which book will you choose? The one with an attractive title and cover. It gives you a promise of something that interests you, solves a problem, or promises you a good time. ⠀
Your Instagram graphic, your videos must act as a magnet, attract customers. Pictures are fun, they work well in many industries. You will add text to the photo – you will get the effect of a book cover. ⠀
Don’t let your client pass by your content indifferently. Your Instagram content (Post, Instastory, IGTV) should sell what’s inside at the cover level.
# 6: Choose your hashtags properly
Well-chosen hashtags can increase engagement. When choosing hashtags for your post, you can choose up to 30 keywords that define what you do and offer where you do it. When choosing hashtags, think like your potential client would think when looking for you. Badly chosen hashtags that have nothing to do with your post will make the engagement low.
# 7: Add a call to action
You want your community to engage with your content – ask them to do it! Your content should not be missing a call to action. Even if you still have a relatively small Instagram community. Why?
Thanks to well-chosen hashtags, your profile can be visited every day by dozens of people who use Instagram as a place of orientation in the buying process. Therefore, a call to action should be included in every post.
There are different ways to call to action – those with less engagement with your audience and those with more engagement.
It can be a call to action that does not require any major obligations from your observer, e.g. ask to like a post, leave a comment containing opinions, or mark a friend who might be interested in a given post.
On the other hand, mix the non-binding call to action with the one that requires leaving an e-mail, filling in a contact form, or registering, e.g. for an event. # 8: Post when your followers are online
I pay a lot of attention to when I publish my content. I usually prepare posts a few days in advance, if they concern current affairs, then at the latest the day before. Thanks to this, I can publish them at the time when the commitment on my account is the highest. How can you know that? Here the answer is to combine target group knowledge and testing.
Consider when your followers are on Instagram. Test your post at different times. However, if you are just starting out, post it on weekdays between 8:00 am and 9:00 am. In the evening, however, between 19:00 and 20:00.
# 9: Engage with your community
Getting more involved with your post doesn’t just mean waiting for others to respond. After publishing your post, take the time to reply to comments under your post. It is important that you have this time right after publication because the more comments about an hour after publication – the greater the reach your post will have. Yes, I’m talking about the algorithm again. 😉
Additionally, I recommend engaging with your followers. People are taking the time to engage with your content, why not engage with your content? I guarantee you that the comment left on someone’s profile will be sincerely appreciated and possibly reciprocated.
Finally, a morsel – if you know your target group, you also know what hashtags they use. Follow these hashtags and regularly engage with content posted with that hashtag. Leave an interesting comment, opening the possibility of establishing a relationship that may result in cooperation or a new order. However, avoid meaningless comments like “mega” or “cool photo”. These only irritate Instagram account owners.
