The carbonless paper uses standard colours to quickly identify which papers are coated on the back (CB), coated on the front (CF), or coated both back and front (CFB). Most carbonless is sold “pre-collated,” which means that the various sheets that make up a carbonless set have already been sequenced in the correct order.
2-Part carbonless paper
A two-part carbonless paper contains only two sheets. Only the back (CB) of the top sheet is coated, while only the front (F) of the second sheet is coated (CF). What is the procedure for using carbonless paper forms?
Carbonless paper is coated in tiny capsules with special chemicals that allow it to make copies without the use of carbon paper. A back coat and a front coat are included in the set. When you press or write on the back coat, it contains microcapsules of ink that react. The ink capsules burst when there is pressure on the page, marking the page below. Because these capsules are so small, they reproduce the writing on the top sheet perfectly. The front coat is a reactive clay layer that reacts with the ink to leave a permanent mark.
Because finding and using the correct collated sequence can be quite confusing, this is where the most perplexing and common errors occur.
You must ensure that your final collation is correct, whether your carbonless is pre-collated (pre-sequenced) or in single sheets that will require collation. The most common type of pre-collation is “reverse.” It simply means that the sheets have been pre-collated backward.
For example, the three-part Reverse is available in Pink, Canary, and White. As an example, when a copier or printer pulls each sheet through, it will first print the Pink sheet and lay it down after printing, then print the Canary sheet to place on top of the Pink, and finally, print the Whitetop sheet to place on top of the Pink. Now that the White sheet is on top, the White / Canary / Pink set is complete and ready to perform the magical image transferring that carbonless paper is known for.
Isn’t that simple?
A Straight (or sometimes called Forward) pre-collation, on the other hand, prints a three-part carbonless set by pulling the White sheet first and setting it face down after printing, then the Canary, and finally the Pink. Each one is placed on its back. As a result, it is still ordered White, Canary, Pink in the collation when a set is printed. The image transfer has now been completed.
Before ordering, always test your printer to see if you need Reverse or Straight collation. Unless you want to spend hours re-collating, knowing which collation your printer requires is critical to making the job simple and painless.
A word of caution: 1) make sure your sheets are in the correct order, and 2) don’t flip them over. The chemical coatings (designated CB, CFB, and CF) are arranged in a specific order that must be maintained for the image transfer to work.
To fill out a 3, 4, 5, or 6 part set with the required number of sheets, CFB sheets must be placed between the CB top and the CF bottom sheets. Although these sheets are coated on both sides (CFB), they must not be flipped over because the coating on the front and back of these sheets is different.
